Literature Essays - Characters In Romeo And Juliet, Free Essays Literature In life as in literature people have certain struggles. In the novels and short stories we read this year there are several example of inner struggles, within the characters. The basic type of struggles known to people is Man Vs Man, Man Vs Nature and Man Vs Himself, otherwise known as inner struggle. It is when you have within yourself problems, concerns or questions that you must decide. They often decide to keep it's feeling and emotion to themselves. Like the famous Ghandi once said, "It was confrontation out of real humanity which marks his true stature and which makes his struggles and glimpses of truth of enduring significance. As a man of his time who asked the deepest questions, even, though he could not answer them, become a man for all times and all places. [ ] All struggles can be solved even though solving it made cause fatal deaths like in the play Romeo and Juliet. Often short stories and novels contains some sort of inner struggle, in order to make the plot more interesting. In real life inner struggles happen frequently from the littlest things such as thinking how to get some money in order to get the certain things you want or probably one of the most dangerous inner struggle which is love, always keep your mind confused or frustrated. Sometimes inner struggles cause modern day people to commit suicide. People like Kurt Cobain has died within the years because of his inner struggle. We see that in the play Romeo and Juliet it contains continuos inner struggles. Romeo's character undergoes several changes in the course of the play's action. At first he is pictured as a typical youth smitten by love. His father's description of him is in effect' a description of the Petrarchan lover: Many a morning hath he there been seen, With tears augmenting the fresh morning's dew Adding to clouds more clouds with his deep sighs; .. Away from light steals home my heavy son, And private in his chamber pens himself, Shuts up his windows, locks fair daylight out And makes himself an artificial night [I, I, 138-47] Romeo's inner struggle begins with him falling in love with Juliet. Their two families, the Capulets and the Montegue hated each other and will not allow their children to socialize. Romeo must decide if he should go against their wishes and see her. Mercutio's death begins another inner struggle in Romeo's life. Mercutio's death leads to Romeo's killing of Tybalt. That killing lead to Romeo's banishment. He wants to see Juliet but he is scared that he'll get caught and thrown to Jail. Once again he faces new inner struggles, but the biggest struggle of all is when he find out that Juliet, his future, is dead, and he has to decide on whether he should stay alive or die to see her. Juliet's character, like Romeo's undergoes a development during the play. There is, at the beginning of the play, a fond attachment between Juliet and the Nurse. For example, she calls her, "O honey nurse" and "good sweet nurse. She takes her into complete confidence. But as the play continues and Juliet becomes a new person, now independent except for the love that binds her to her husband, She chooses action that defy the Nurse and her parents. He detachment from the Nurses at first caused by the old women's double-talk in coveying the news of Tybalt's death. Juliet asks her, "What devil art thou that dost torment me thus"? Later, after the Nurse advises her to marry Paris, Juliet is fully disillusioned and decides to break their bond of confidence. "Ancient damnation. O most wicked fiend!" she screams at the Nurse: "Go, counselor; Thou and my bosom henceforth shall be twain" [III, v, 237-42] In her first scenes, Juliet was submission to her parents' wishes: I'll look to like, if looking liking move: But no more deep will I endart mine eye Than your consent gives strength to make it fly. Driessen - Essay Example Paul Driessen's book Eco-Imperialism: Green Power, Black Death considers the subject of how the extremists of the environmental lobby within the rich and developed countries of the west are pushing their own ecological standards upon those of the less developed world (Driessen, 2003). Paul Driessen has worked within the Senate and Department of the Interior as well as being involved in support groups. However, through out his time in Washington he has slowly realised that the process of support for the environment has slowly ground to a halt, or has become so blinkered by its own ideologies that it has stopped accepting fresh new ideas and evidence that would help saves the lives of billions (Driessen, 2003). Driessen puts forward the statement that has been argued by many that the environment and theories concerning its values should always be taken into consideration and placed over saving human lives. This statement and its actions is seen as being the cause of so many lives being lost in the third world countries (Driessen, 2003). What makes matters worse is that many of these eco-imperialist groups are advocating the need to heal the earth, these groups include Greenpeace, who through the many years of its existence may have used up more oil on it's boat the rainbow warrior than any other shipping or whaling industry. Their aim and agenda is to save the world but at the cost of human life, which sadly can be found in much of the third world (Driessen, 2003). Driessen illustrates that those eco-imperialists are purposely and deliberately forcing their own ideals onto the world and as such are responsible for the death of so many lives around the globe. It is ideas such as the removal of DDT as a pesticide that has caused the rise of mosquitoes. This has caused the death of nearly 2 million people a year in sub Saharan Africa (Driessen, 2003). Driessen points out that when DDT is sprayed in the homes there is no risk to the environment or to people. Moreover, it has been illustrated that by using DDT the South African government had stemmed the number of deaths to around 10,000 per year. Sadly when DDT was halted the deaths rose to a staggeringly 62,000 a year and again fell when DDT was reintroduced (Driessen, 2003) Furthermore, the book illustrates the change in economies and demands for new doctrines for Corporate Social Responsibility, in this the demands are placed upon these groups instead of their own goals and profits, sadly once these ideals are defined then the policies that look at human suffering and misery become less important in favour of profit (Driessen, 2003). Driessen offers up the new ethical codes as a questionable way for the eco-imperialists to push for their ideologies upon the world (Driessen, 2003). The argument by such groups that invoke the eco-imperialistic ethos that science, technology and industry should be removed or refused to the third world countries can be seen as once again elitist, how can a country develop if it is refused the technology in which to do so. Many of the third world countries population seek to move out of their stone age huts and live in modern houses with electricity and clean fresh running water, the kind of things at many in the west take for granted. Yet these poor people are denied even the right of living like modern humans by elitist groups whose only ideal is their own back yard

In the book Blue like Jazz there is a couple of conversion stories I would like to talk about. The first one comes from Chapter 4. It is the conversion of Millers friend Penny. Penny was a person who did not like Christians and Christianity based on the stereotypes that she had seen and the world has given to them. In the chapter it says that Penny wanted nothing to do with Christianity until she met a friend from her school. She went to college at the same place as miller, which is reed college, and after her freshman year she decided to study at a school in france. While there she was introduced to another student from Reed who she was very fond of and her name is Nadine. Nadine was a very nice person to Penny and listened to Penny’s childhood problems intently and with care. One night Nadine told Penny that she was a christian and Penny was very upset by it. She did not want to believe that this person that was so nice, kind and listened to her so well was a Christian because from her perspective of Christianity these were not traits of a Christian. Then when Penny started to think about it she found out that maybe Christianity has something to offer her. This was the beginning process of her conversion. She may not have changed her ways immediately but this way of thinking and meeting Nadine really opened up her mind to Christianity. Later in the book it goes to talk about how she converts after hearing the voice of God while she was high on drugs. This may or may not be true but personally I believe that it is. I think that God will come to people when they are most vulnerable and tell them straight up what they need to here. A couple of days later after hearing Gods voice she prayed and asked for forgiveness of her sins and that is the day that she converted. All that was left was a public display of conversion, also known as baptism.

As the broad use of chemical warfare commenced, the trenches became a difficult area to provide refuge from contagion or death. Also known today as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), shell shock was an immobilizing mental illness in which soldiers were affected greatly because of WWI. Two of the most frequent diseases, cholera and typhoid fever, were also a constant threat among the soldiers on a daily basis. Along with trench warfare, many technological advancements were launched, either producing advantages or disadvantages for forces that fought one another during WWI. Two of the most vital war inventions of the early 1900s were chemical warfare, such as poison gas, grenades, phosphene, gas masks, etc., and importantly, the enhancement of the machine gun. As well as chemical warfare and machine guns, there was the development of airplanes, tanks, and many more critical improvements in various equipment. Chemical warfare was, of course, created by the Germans. Once chemical warfare was fabricated along with the protection of gas masks, this new addition made the war seem slightly simpler to plan for a multitudinous amount of men to suffer or die at the same time. Machine guns were originally produced by an American, Hiram Maxim, but later upgraded for WWI by the Germans. Also known as fighter planes, airplanes were an enormous benefit to WWI and were also invented by the Germans. They were a huge benefit because many soldiers felt they could kill their contending side more easily as they used machine guns or bombs on the planes to kill enemies below and unexpectedly, instead of on ground level. Constructed by the British, tanks were massively protected machines that held major guns. Unfortunately, their power did not greatly improve until WWII when the French created a new model, but the first tank was still an accomplishment and a vast betterment for WWI as a whole. Ultimately, these technological advancements impacted the overall effects and battles of WWI, which in turn gave the soldiers hope to win the war through their strong nationalism towards their country. Aside from the trenchs safety issues like too much water, which causes many diseases and uncleanliness for the soldiers, there was no boundary to protect the soldiers on either the Western or Eastern Front (either side of battle). However, without a doubt, the technological advancements that benefitted the many forces of WWI far outweighed the harsh conditions and less than ideal circumstances because without them, the battle might not have extended for many more years and resulted in many more thousands of fatalities. According to historians of History.com, most soldiers of the Allied force died because of the diseases they faced in the trenches. This being said, the soldiers strong bravery and patriotism/nationalism towards their country and their family kept them going through the trenchs hard trials and the wars nightmarish four years and three months.
